MAISIAT Jean Étienne, known as Joanny (1824-1910)
French Painter born on May 5th, 1824 in Lyon, dead in 1910
He was the son of Étienne Maisiat (Lyon, 1794 - 1848) who was a famous weaver of silk and professor at the school of La Martinière.
He was pupil of the School of Beaux-Arts Lyon in the class of flowers. He initially was the pupil of his father, then of Augustin Thierriat (1789-1870) in 1843 in Lyon. In 1852 he is the pupil of Lehmann, in Paris. He specialized in the painting of flowers and fruits in sophisticated compositions or those which push along the ways and of the banks.
He exposed his paintings to the Salon of Paris and Lyon starting from 1850 until 1900. He was medal-holder at Paris in 1864, 1867 and accepted a medal of 2nd classe in 1872. He exhibited in Vienna in 1873 and Munich in 1883.
He was the drawing-master of Caroline Franklin-Grout, niece of Gustave Flaubert in 1861. Gustave Flaubert addresses himself to him when he writes a chapter about painting in « L’éducation sentimentale », in 1867.
