Set of 12 French silverplated bronze Art Deco knife rests manufactured circa 1930-1935 based on the fables of La Fontaine and designed by Benjamin Rabier (a famous French cartoonist of the 1930s).
Jean de La Fontaine was a French poet and fabulist, who lived and worked during the 17th century.
The Art Deco style name was derived from the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, held in Paris in 1925, where the style was first exhibited. Art Deco design represented modernism turned into fashion.
Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695) is a French poet of great renown, mainly for his Fables which are always considered as one of the greatest masterpieces of French literature.

Benjamin Rabier (1864-1939 ) was a French illustrator, comic book artist and animator. He became famous for creating the cow's design on cheese "La vache qui rit" (The Laughing Cow) and and for the comic strip character Gedeon ( Gideon the duck). He is considered one of the greatest European animal cartoonists. His work has inspired many other artists, notably Hergé and Edmond-François Calvo.
