Biographie :

Willem van Mieris, peintre hollandais né et décédé à Leyde (1662-1747), est issu d’une lignée d’artistes. Frère cadet de Jan Van Mieris et fils de Frans Van Mieris l’Ancien, il bénéficie de l’enseignement paternel dès son plus jeune âge.

En 1683, il rejoint la Guilde de Saint-Luc de Leyde et épouse Agneta Schapmann l’année suivante. En 1694, il co-fonde l’académie de dessin de Leyde avec Karel de Moor, qu’il dirige jusqu’en 1736. Il occupe également les fonctions de commissaire et de doyen de la Guilde.

Parmi ses élèves figurent son fils Franz van Mieris le Jeune et Herman van der Myn. Malgré la perte de la vue dans ses dernières années, Willem van Mieris laisse un héritage artistique marquant.

Biography:

Willem van Mieris, a Dutch painter born and deceased in Leiden (1662-1747), hails from a family of artists. The younger brother of Jan Van Mieris and son of Frans Van Mieris the Elder, he benefited from his father’s teachings from a young age.

In 1683, he joined the Guild of Saint Luke in Leiden and married Agneta Schapmann the following year. In 1694, he co-founded the Leiden drawing academy with Karel de Moor, which he directed until 1736. He also served as a commissioner and dean of the Guild.

Among his pupils were his son Franz van Mieris the Younger and Herman van der Myn. Despite losing his sight in his later years, Willem van Mieris left a significant artistic legacy.
