Serge Belloni (1925-2005) – L’Aube sur Venise huile sur panneau vers 1970

Serge Belloni surnommé Le Peintre de Paris, consacra sa vie de peintre à retranscrire jour après jour, par tous les temps, le visage de Paris et il consacra une autre partie de sa vie à Venise, montrant un autre de visage de la Sérénissime.
Son second pôle de son activité : Venise, plusieurs mois chaque année, dans une solitude totale qu’il juge indispensable à la création. Ses goûts le portent vers la Venise mineure, la plus ancienne, là où il retrouve l’audace et la force des premiers bâtisseurs qui donnent son âme à la ville.

Ce joli tableau nous montre une ravissante vue du Grand Canal à Venise à l’aube, la palette de couleur apaisante incite au voyage, à la reverie.

Biographie :
 
Serge Belloni (1925-2005), dit Le Peintre de Paris, est né à Plaisance, en Italie, le 25 février 1925 et il décède à Menton décède le 28 octobre 2005.
 
Il est le fils du tapissier Luigi Belloni et de Elvira Belloni née Molinari.
 
Il arrive à Paris en 1933 où il étudie la peinture à l’École supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris.
 
Il organise sa première exposition en 1946 à Paris à l’âge de 21 ans. Dès lors il vivra uniquement et sans compromis de sa peinture, en portant, comme il aime à le dire, chaque jour sa croix. Il travaille tous les jours, en toute saison, sans jamais s’arrêter, comme si la vie lui échappait à chaque instant. Il travaille par n’importe quel temps. Il peint « sur le motif ».
 
De nombreux voyages en Hollande lui permettent d’étudier les secrets des maîtres flamands.
Il travaille à la redécouverte des techniques anciennes qu’il ne cessera de perfectionner. Il utilise la technique la peinture à l’œuf.

 Ma première rencontre avec Serge Belloni se situe au début des années 50. Un ami que nous avions en commun, directeur du journal de Plaisance (la ville où Belloni est né), m’avait prié d’entrer en contact avec lui. L’artiste préparait à l’époque une exposition consacrée à Paris et à Venise : la troisième qu’il présentait à un public particulièrement exigeant, celui de sa ville d’adoption. Je devais donc faire sa connaissance, voir ses dernières œuvres et dire ou plutôt écrire si, à mon avis, elles répondaient aux promesses du jeune peintre auquel deux illustres poètes et quelques amateurs éclairés avaient prédit, quelques années auparavant, un avenir éclatant.
 
L’entretien commença dans un restaurant de l’île Saint-Louis et se poursuivit dans le petit atelier du 25, quai d’Anjou (abandonné depuis par Belloni pour celui moins bohème mais plus confortable du 27, quai de Bourbon).
 
Je fus conquis dès les premiers instants. Tout d’abord par l’homme aimant passionnément tout ce qui est beau, l’idéaliste généreux sensible à toutes les souffrances du monde ; puis, ayant vu ses toiles, par l’artiste.
 
Chez Belloni, l’homme et l’artiste ne font d’ailleurs qu’un. Dans les réunions d’amis comme dans toutes les soirées mondaines, dans l’intimité de son atelier comme dans les rues où il peint par tous les temps, au cours des rares loisirs qu’il s’accorde comme en pleine création, Serge reste égal à lui-même. Si je devais le définir en quelques mots, je dirais : il vit sa peinture comme il vit sa vie, avec courage et simplicité ; il est sa peinture.
 
Il est sa peinture et son œuvre est un tout. Qu’il s’agisse de ses natures mortes si vivantes, de ses portraits émouvants, de ses bouquets d’une rare luminosité ou des admirables paysages de Paris et d’ailleurs.
           
On l’appelle « le peintre de Paris ». On pourrait également le nommer le peintre des cinq saisons, la cinquième étant celle du cœur, de la poésie à l’état pur, des sentiments exprimés par le somptueux arc de sa palette.
           
Nombre de mes confrères ont écrit ces dernières années que Serge Belloni ne cotise à aucune chapelle, n’appartient à aucune école sinon celle du travail bien fait. C’est exact.
           
J’ajouterai pour ma part que depuis le jour où je l’ai rencontré pour la première fois, son but est resté le même : tendre inlassablement et de toutes ses forces vers un idéal de perfection.

Serge Belloni, nicknamed « The Painter of Paris », devoted his life as a painter to transcribing day after day, in all weathers, the face of Paris and he devoted another part of his life to Venice, showing another face of the Serenissima.
The second pole of his activity: Venice, for several months each year, in total solitude that he considered essential to creation. His tastes led him to Venice Minor, the oldest part of the city, where he found the boldness and strength of the first builders who gave the city its soul.

This lovely painting depicts a lovely view of the Grand Canal in Venice at dawn, with a soothing color palette that invites us to travel and dream.

Biography:

Serge Belloni, known as The Painter of Paris, is the son of the upholsterer Luigi Belloni and Elvira Belloni née Molinari. He moved to Paris in 1933 where he studied painting at the Ecole supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He exhibited his paintings from 1946.

First prize of painting in Versailles (1949), Marie Bashkirtseff prize (1952), Silver Medal of the City of Paris, Vermeil Medal of the City of Paris (1980).

Serge Belloni was born in Piacenza, Italy, on February 25, 1925. As a child, he lived in Paris, in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, where his parents had lived for many years. His father, a craftsman, worked as an upholsterer-decorator.

Serge Belloni had to work part-time to pay for his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts; these were difficult years that left their mark. At that time, he became friends with Lucien Moretti and Gérard Blondel.

At a very young age, Serge Belloni showed his work in exhibitions, following a solitary path from the beginning, far from genre groups.

He organized his first exhibition in Paris at the age of 21; from then on he lived solely, and without compromise, from his painting, carrying, as he likes to say, his cross every day. Whatever the weather, he painted « on the spot ». Numerous trips to Holland allowed him to study, on the spot, the secrets of the Flemish masters. He worked on the rediscovery of ancient techniques that he would never stop perfecting. He uses the egg painting technique.

Serge Belloni works every day, in all seasons, without ever stopping, as if life was escaping him at every moment. His paintings are in the most important collections: Paris, Milan, Moscow, and New York …

Serge Belloni died in Menton on October 28, 2005.

I first met Serge Belloni in the early 50s. A friend we had in common, the editor of the newspaper in Piacenza (the town where Belloni was born), had asked me to get in touch with him. At the time, the artist was preparing an exhibition devoted to Paris and Venice: the third he had presented to a particularly demanding public, that of his adopted city. So I was to meet him, see his latest works, and say or rather write whether, in my opinion, they lived up to the promise of the young painter to whom two illustrious poets and a few enlightened amateurs had predicted, a few years earlier, a dazzling future.

The meeting began in a restaurant on the Île Saint-Louis and continued in the small studio at 25, quai d’Anjou (since abandoned by Belloni for the less bohemian but more comfortable studio at 27, quai de Bourbon).

I was won over from the start. First of all by the man who passionately loved all that is beautiful, the generous idealist sensitive to all the sufferings of the world; then, having seen his paintings, by the artist.

In Belloni, the man and the artist are the same. At gatherings of friends and all the social evenings, in the intimacy of his studio and in the streets where he paints in all weathers, in the rare spare time he allows himself, and during his creative work, Serge remains true to himself. If I had to define him in a few words, I’d say: he lives his painting as he lives his life, with courage and simplicity; he is his painting.

He is his painting and his work is a whole. Whether it’s his vivid still lifes, his moving portraits, his bouquets of rare luminosity, or his admirable landscapes of Paris and beyond.

He is known as ‘the painter of Paris’. We could also call him the painter of the five seasons, the fifth being that of the heart, of poetry in its purest state, of feelings expressed by the sumptuous arc of his palette.

Many of my colleagues have written over the last few years that Serge Belloni does not belong to any particular school, other than that of a job well done. This is true.

For my part, I would add that since the day I first met him, his aim has remained the same: to strive tirelessly and with all his might towards an ideal of perfection.
