Jacques Blin (1920-1995)

Jacques Blin is a well-known French ceramist who started as an aeronautical and automobile engineer. During the Second World War he taught industrial design in Paris and worked in the aviation industry. At the end of the 1940’s, he decided to pursue his passion for design at an artistic level and started to learn ceramics in Paris at different workshops. He began creating jewelry, lamps and, utilitarian ceramics produced in small workshops in Paris, Indre and the Loire region. His friendship with the painter Jean Rustin (1928-2013) helped him to develop a personal imaginary in his ceramics. His creations are often engraved on the clay with mythological figures that include wild and fantastic animals making his style recognizable. He received national and international acclaim; exhibitions and awards such as the Bernard Palissy Grand Prix (1958), and the first place at the 1965 International Ceramic exhibition. From 1971 to 1991, Jacques Blin was president of the Chambre Syndicale des Ceramistes and was a founding member of the Salon des Ateliers d’Art, known today as the: Fondation des Ateliers d’Art. He was knighted with the Legion of Honor in 1983 and became Officer of the National Order of Merit in 1988.
