Military bivouac in front of a castle – Circa 1820.

Oil on canvas signed lower left.
Dimensions: 60 x 73 cm – with frame: 75 x 88 cm.
The painter gives us here a scene of the daily life of the military rather than a combat scene. The atmosphere is relaxed; the soldiers are eating and warming themselves around a fire at the foot of a castle.
In the background a beautiful panoramic view of the valley and the sky allows us to take in the whole landscape.
Adolphe Roehn began painting historical scenes in a self-taught manner, without a master, then later specialized in genre and portrait painting.
He appeared at the Paris salons from 1799 to 1866.
In 1831, he ran a drawing and painting studio for women.
He won the silver medal in the competition at the Salon de peinture et de sculpture in 1810 with Le lendemain de la bataille d'Eylau, commissioned by the Prince of Neufchâtel; then the gold medal at the Salon in 1819. He also won two other medals at the exhibitions in Lille in 1824 and Douai in 1826.
