This very fine male character, depicted full-length, leaning against a plant-filled ground, is in the direct line of similar productions of the last century, namely the XVIIIth. This typology of objects falling into the category of luxury pocket pieces, we owe it among others, originally, to the manufactures of Meissen and Rudolstadt. Several examples dating from this period are today preserved at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris or at the Cognacq-Jay Museum. The primary function, that is to say utilitarian, of these subjects being disguised, the latter arouse the curiosity of the spectator in an amusing way.
A paragon of refinement, these bottles are witnesses to the savoir-vivre and delicacy that presided over the French court in the Age of Enlightenment, where the evolution of the toilet and coquetry held a primordial place. Indeed, at this time, thanks to a particularly favorable historical context, we witness the development of a refined taste that the whole of Europe sought to imitate. From the Regency (1715-1723), luxury and pleasure reigned supreme in the noble and courtly sphere. Finery multiplied in order to preserve beauty, to contemplate it, to increase it but also in the service of seduction. Delicate and precious, they met the needs of the elite, while illustrating the themes of their daily life: hunting, rural leisure activities, menageries or even exoticism.
This display case is therefore a true tribute to the XVIIIth century with all that it embodies of most sumptuous in the collective imagination. The young man, who can recall the figure of Pierrot by his white costume and his ruff, also wears a pair of yellow shoes with buckles as well as a brown headdress close to hunting or a pastoral. The underside of the piece has a mark accompanied by a painted yellow butterfly, all in very good condition.
