Claude VENARD

Sirens at the Port, cir. 1960

Oil on canvas
166 x 136cm
Original painting by Claude Vénard, a French artist who lived in Paris and then in Sanary-sur-mer from the 60s.
He distinguished himself with semi-abstract, sometimes cubist painting, with significant touches of bright colours with black outlines.

He painted views of Paris, from his studio, and of the Ports.
This work is particularly significant of his aesthetic concerns: it represents a reclining woman with a fish tail, accompanied by several other silhouettes of mermaids. These semi-abstract figures sit in front of a landscape with multiple layers of bright colors applied in thickness with a knife. In the background, a large bridge adds a dimension of depth to the work whose perspective leads us to two industrial buildings with a figurative character.

An unclassifiable artist, Claude Vénard is a figure of modern art. He exhausted and co-opted in his paintings the greatest stylistic concerns of the 20th century. This large-scale work is a synthesis of his favorite motifs and a lively and assured touch. The thick layers of oil paint bring relief to the flatness of the work.

Work sold with its certificate of authenticity.
