David Teniers II, known as The Younger (1610-1690), after Village party (1651, oil on copper, Rotterdam) - Unsigned small painting from the second half of the XNUMXth century, bearing on its reverse a handwritten dedication in pen: " To Charles Weber/ Fontaine-aux- S….”. – Oil on paper mounted on a wooden panel set in a rectangular frame in blackened molded wood enhanced with pearl and ovoid patterned strips. Circa 1870.
---
Just like in the oil on copper (1651) nowadays preserved in Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam including David Teniers II, known as The Younger (Antwerp, 1610-Brussels, 1690) notorious representative of painting 17th century Flemish genre painter was to later produce succulent variations on canvas*, we find in this small painting the amusing sanyétes associated with the evocation of this Village Festival very lively.
perched on a barrel, a musician, bagpipes in hand, sets the tempo for this festive moment which, at the end of the afternoon, brings together modest hovels the village community members dressed in rustic clothes. On the clay, A lively young couple dances happily under the envious gaze of a man msafe; pitcher in hand, a tavern keeper activates, a satiated drinker urine; businessmen, two plump individuals plan to join the table where the bourgeois of the rural locality feast. The foot flexes, warmed by the wine, a peasant hugs a young woman reluctantly sitting on a wooden bench; from naughty old men become bolder around a young person.Drunk man fell asleep on wine barrels.
Forming "still lifes", humble domestic utensils and furniture (plates, dishes, jugs, copper cauldron, tea towels and broom) arranged alongside the barrels punctuate the foreground of this small composition with a more ochre chromatism than on the original copper by David Teniers. Tightened, the background creates a more "rustic" atmosphere and, in fact, prompts to convey the deep rurality of 17th century Flanders. The little prancing dog that followed the hopping steps of the dancing couple has escaped...
A small painting that will fit easily into the privileged interior of a country residence..
