Jean-Victor Bertin was born in Paris in 1767 and died in the same city in 1862. He was a student of Pierre Henri de Valenciennes. In 1785 he entered the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture where he was a student of Gabriel-François Doyen. He quickly obtained beautiful chests of drawers for the Trianon, the Château de Fontainebleau, and numerous orders from collectors.
He undertook long journeys in Italy which of course influenced his ancient landscapes.
Our painting is a beautiful landscape where characters dressed in antique style attract our attention in the center of the painting. Ruins of a castle stand out in the middle of the vegetation on the left and a spring appears in the shade of the oaks, bringing freshness.
