Biography :
Pierre-Julien Gilbert (1783-1860), born and died in Brest, devoted himself to the representation of naval scenes. A student of Pierre Ozanne and Louis-Philippe Crépin, he taught painting at the Naval School of Brest from 1816. In 1830, he accompanied the French navy on the Algiers expedition, thus demonstrating his commitment to the maritime institutions of his time.
