The stag rests high on a tree trunk, he is in the middle of the rut, the sculptor highlights the majestic and imposing aspect of the stag, which contrasts with the maternal gentleness of the doe and her fawn.
The sculptor's signature "HEIZLER" is in relief on the richly chiseled and ornamented naturalistic terrace, decorated with foliage.

Hippolyte Heizler (1828-1871)
Hippolyte Heizler, is a famous French animal sculptor, born in Paris on April 19, 1828.
H.Heizler is the son of the sculptor Clément-Bernard-Hippolyte and his wife Julie Lecourt.
A student of the sculptor Justin Lequien, he made his debut at the Salon of 1846 and obtained the "Honorable" Medal in 1852.
He collaborated anonymously on the decoration of the Louvre, the Tuileries and the Paris Opera.
As early as 1846, he set up his workshop at 182 rue de Charonne, in Paris.
In 1868, his workshop was located at 56 rue Oberkampf.
During the siege of Paris in 1870, he contracted acute bronchitis and died from the effects of this disease on October 20, 1871.
His last works were exhibited at the Salon of 1872, after his death.
