Our piece uses an ornamental lexicon composed of leaves and scrolls in shades of green, in keeping with the almond-colored background, punctuated by the juxtaposition of flowers in shades of pink. Each motif is enhanced with a fine gold-colored border, bringing a certain sparkle to the whole, emphasizing the relief of the material, but also echoing the friezes delimiting the decoration. Far from describing a realistic nature, Ernest Chaplet, a renowned French sculptor, part of whose creation is today, on his personal legacy, visible at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, concentrates his inspiration here around simple but effective forms with a dreamlike character. The desire to bring a total aesthetic to the most utilitarian objects, a return to simplicity or even purity is one of the leitmotifs of the Art Nouveau aesthetic which marks the passage of XIXand in the 20th century.
Founded in 1842 by David Haviland, the eponymous factory established in Limoges stands out in the tableware sector. Porcelain becomes a real testing ground, pushing creation towards know-how combined with great finesse with decorations entirely made by hand. Still in business, its history is above all a mixture of influences between France and the United States, in order to achieve works of remarkable quality, like ours.
