Painter of still life paintings, flowers and fruits, watercolourist, Madeleine Lemaire studies under Jeanne Herbelin, than Jules Chaplin. She begins to exhibit in the Salon in 1864 and becomes member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1890. Madeleine Lemaire invites in her house artists, mucisians and writers such as Marcel Proust, Guy de Maupassant or Sarah Bernardt.
Her watercolours and paintings were very appreciated. Lemaire cooperates as an illustrator with the Gazette des Beaux-Arts and the La Vie Moderne, makes the illustrations of Ludovic Halévy's L'Abbé Constantin and etc. She was the teacher of Blanche Odin and Marie Laurencin.
