Advertising poster produced by Cassandre in 1936 for the Italian pastry shop Motta.
Just as Christmas is inseparable from Panettone, Easter also has its cake: Italians indulge in the Colombe, a generous brioche in the shape of a stylized dove, symbol of purity and the arrival of spring. This Dove refers to a beautiful legend: it is said that during the conquest of Pavia in 572, the Lombard King Alboino demanded twelve young girls from his defeated enemies.
One of them had the idea, in exchange for her virginity, to offer the King a cake in the shape of a dove. It seems that the king could not resist this delicious brioche, and that he had the good idea to spare it ...
This great Italian brand of festive delicacies perpetuates the work of Angelo MOTTA, a young Italian pastry-maker who, in 1919, in Milan, reinvented the Panettone to make it the cake we know today, a symbol of all. Christmas in Italy.
In 1925, he opened one of the most famous Italian pastry shops, where the Milanese met to taste Panettone, with a soft and tasty dough and rich in candied fruits and raisins. The pastry shop was known for its elegance, glamorous and cozy atmosphere, but one of the things that set it apart from the rest was the extraordinary service: a small locomotive carried the treats and cakes through the shop, from the counter to the checkout. .
Soon after, Angelo MOTTA created a new recipe inspired by that of Panettone, the Colomba: a soft and airy cake, famous for its dove shape, tasted during the Easter Festival.
It was during the period of social upheaval in the 1920s that the MOTTA logo was truly recognized as a symbol of a new social era. Famous artists were appointed to design and embellish the MOTTA logo, including posters, packaging and advertisements, recognized all over the world. The values conveyed by the designer remain anchored in the Motta brand: respect for natural ingredients, traditions and Italian know-how.
