Christophe Fratin est un sculpteur français et l’un des premiers à pratiquer le style animalier , une tendance du milieu du XIXe siècle de portraits d’animaux dans un style romantique et naturaliste que l’on retrouve dans les domaines de la sculpture et de la peinture .
Sa statue " Deux Aigles Gardant Leur Proie " (1850) , montre les animaux dans des poses dynamiques et est exposée à Central Park depuis 1863 , faisant d’elle la plus ancienne et célèbre sculpture de tous les parcs new-yorkais .
Né le 1er janvier 1801 , à Metz , Fratin est le fils d’un taxidermiste qui lui apprend l’anatomie animale .
Il s’installe ensuite à Paris et étudie le dessin et la sculpture dans le studio du peintre romantique Théodore Géricault .
Aujourd’hui , les sculptures de Fratin figurent dans les collections permanentes du Louvre et de musées à Metz , Lyon, Strasbourg et Nîmes .
Fratin , meurt le 17 août 1864 à Le Raincy et est enterré dans le cimetière de Montmartre .

Christophe Fratin (1801-1864)
Christophe Fratin was a French sculptor and one of the first to practice the animal style , a mid-19th century trend of animal portraiture in a romantic , naturalistic style found in the fields of sculpture and painting .
His statue " Two Eagles Guarding Their Prey " (1850) , shows the animals in dynamic poses and has been on display in Central Park since 1863 , making it the oldest and most famous sculpture in any New York park .
Born January 1, 1801 , in Metz, Fratin was the son of a taxidermist who taught him animal anatomy .
He then moved to Paris and studied drawing and sculpture in the studio of the romantic painter Théodore Géricault .
Today Fratin's sculptures are in the permanent collections of the Louvre and museums in Metz , Lyon , Strasbourg and Nîmes .
Fratin, died on August 17, 1864 in Le Raincy and was buried in the Montmartre cemetery .
