Il est l'un des plus importants statutaires du XVIIIème siècle. Réputé pour le rendu réaliste de ses œuvres, habile non seulement dans le travail en marbre, Houdon avait aussi un talent et aptitude pour façonner la terre, le plâtre, la terre cuite et le bronze. On l'appelle souvent « le sculpteur des Lumières ».

He is one of the most important statuary artists of the 18th century. Renowned for the realistic rendering of his works, skilled not only in marble, Houdon also had a talent and aptitude for shaping clay, plaster, terracotta and bronze. He is often called "the sculptor of the Enlightenment".
